About Us
Through the Dock to Door (D2D) Coalition, led by Virginia Tech, organizations have an opportunity to play a direct part in the revitalization of our regional economy through the accelerated deployment of a sustainable and resilient supply chain model. Scaled up, the coalition efforts will have transformative regional impacts while also improving equity, national security, and prosperity.
Coalition activities will advance the next generation of transportation infrastructure and advanced vehicles, which can lead to improvements in transportation safety and equity and reduce carbon emissions as we move toward a brighter future of freight transport.
Vision
We envision a world where goods move seamlessly and reliably from dock to door through a fully connected, resilient, environmentally sustainable, and equitable transportation system. Through our coalition, we will transform the region’s supply chain into one that ensures access to essential goods and services for all citizens, providing opportunities for participation by many, giving rise to new products and industries, while enabling opportunities for decarbonization and energy sustainability in transportation sector.
Mission
Our mission is to develop an integrated approach for modern freight transport by galvanizing partners to confront and resolve critical and problematic supply chain issues. We will accomplish this mission through programs which will serve as catalysts to realizing our vision and supporting our core commitments.
Our Commitment
Our coalition is committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA), and we will build on existing and create new opportunities for underserved individuals throughout our region. We are also committed to a sustainable carbon-neutral future by minimizing the transportation carbon footprint in the movement of goods.
“To address the climate crisis, we must eliminate nearly all greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the sector by 2050 and implement a holistic strategy to achieve a future mobility system that is clean, safe, secure, accessible, affordable, and equitable, and provides sustainable transportation options for people and goods.”

Today where there is fragmentation and inefficiency, the Dock to Door Coalition will create a sustainable partnership platform to accelerate next-generation innovation, and:
Deliver transformational and sustainable regional growth to increase mobility and accessibility of critical goods to reduce rural food deserts, assist elderly and people with disabilities to age in place, increase accessibility to pharmaceuticals, generate employment opportunities, and improve the environment.
Provide educational and career opportunities for historically disadvantaged populations – to address workforce shortages and develop market-relevant programs to fill supply chain-related education and workforce gaps.
Cultivate a technology and innovation mindset through public engagement on the community benefits of new last-mile delivery services, new job opportunities across the supply chain, education and training alternatives, and expanded mobility for individuals and their families alike.
Foster a sustainable future by reducing the high impact greenhouse gas emissions from the transportation sector and improving the air quality of historically disadvantaged communities along heavily trafficked freight corridors.
